UPCOMING LOCAL EVENTS
Goulburn Ovens TAFE will be delivering the Food Handlers Certificate (FH) and the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate here at the College.
Food Handlers—Wed 4 March 9am -3pm—Cost $55
RSA—Wed 11 March 9am -1pm—Cost $55
There is a further discount of $10 for anyone who does both certificates. This is cheap…( Regular prices are RSA $85 & FH $150). So get in while the price is right.
Year 11 & 12 students are invited to register their interest with Mrs Scadden. Mrs Humphries Food & Technology students must complete the Food Handlers Certificate.
UPCOMING STATE EVENTS
Interested in a career in the Automotive Industry?: The annual Automotive Careers Week Seminars are being held during the Melbourne International Motor Show, Melbourne Exhibition Centre. The seminars are being held on the 3rd and 4th of March. You will be able to meet other young people working successfully in a variety of careers in the Auto Industry. Interested in a Career in Aviation? The Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition the 13th of March. Only 10 students can attend from years 9 – 11. They do not allow individual students to register. If you would like to attend, please see Mrs Scadden.
Passionate about Hospitality? William Angliss TAFE run a program called Trial-a-Trade each year. You get to learn about careers in the Hospitality Industry by trying ones as diverse as the following- chef, baker, butcher, waiter, barista, confectioner or patissier. Apart from learning new skills, you will get to work with other young people to put on a luncheon! Trial a Trade is on the 14th of March at William Angliss TAFE Institute, 555 La Trobe St, Melbourne. Interested in becoming a Veterinary Surgeon? Univeristy of Melbourne is hosting their annual VET-DAY 09 on the 22nd of March. You will be able to learn more about the Universities Veterinary Science course, view equine and small animal surgery and go ‘behind the scenes’ of their Veterinary Clinic and Hospital. Graphic Design Conference: Are you interested in a career in Graphic Design? Then you should consider attending the Uni of Ballarat ‘Push Up 09’ conference. Attendance is free and you will be able to hear from 6 Industry guest speakers from all over Victoria. You will also be able to speak to Uni of Ballarat lecturers about courses available in Graphic Design. The conference will be held on the 25th of March at Ballarat. The Age VCE and Careers Expo: We are planning an excursion to this Expo for VCE students in Term 2. This is a fantastic annual event which enables senior school students to participate in a diverse range of over 120 seminars related to VCE subjects, gap year opportunities, Institute courses, career pathways and VCE study skills. 150 organisations will be in attendance, enabling students to be able to talk to course advisers. The event is being held at Caulfield Racecourse (opposite the Caulfield Station) between the 24th – 26th of April—we shall be going on the 24th. Considering a Career working at a Zoo? Then book in to attend one of the Careers Days at Werribee Open Range Zoo. Get an insight into what a job working with Zoo animals actually entails and talk with employees about their experiences. Dates: April- 8, 9, 16, 17, 23, 24 (program repeated each day); Cost: $39.50. SCHOLARSHIPS
The date for all Defence Technical Scholarship Application forms to be handed in has been extended to the 27th of February due to the Bushfires and Floods. Students who were eligible were given application forms, if you have not returned your form, the please do so by Monday 23rd February.
Two students who have already applied for the scholarship will sit their tests next week here under exam conditions.
HIGHER EDUCATION
Folio Preparation Courses: Some tertiary courses require you to have a portfolio as part of their selection process. The RMIT Folio preparation courses cover areas such as Graphic Design, Graphic Arts, Digital Media, Interior Design, Visual Merchandising, Visual/ Fine Art, Drawing Techniques for Design, Multimedia, Career Discovery- Building Design & Drawing and Introduction to Architectural Drawing Techniques. UMAT: Some courses like Medicine, Optometry, Dentistry and Physiotherapy require you to undertake the Undergraduate Medical Admissions Test. You need to register for this test by June and you sit the test in July. GAP YEAR INFORMATION
Thinking of taking a year off to travel overseas after school? Then check out the following two ideas:
Cultural Care Au Pair: If you are interested in working with children and travelling to the USA, you could work as an Au Pair (live in Nanny). You need to be between 18 – 16yrs old to be able to participate in the program. If you would like to learn more about the program, you can attend a free information session between February the 21st – 28th. You will have the opportunity to hear from a girl who has just returned from the program and you will also be able to receive a discount off the cost of the program if you decide to join. Latitude Global Volunteering: Would you like to have the opportunity to travel overseas during your Gap Year? YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
Young Endeavour Youth Scheme: Applications are open for the adventure of a lifetime! You will spend 11 days on the ocean learning all about how to maintain and handle a ship and work in partnership with other young people. Two yr 12 students have just returned from the program and will be speaking at a school assembly about their amazing experiences.
